Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management

Florida State University
(Tallahassee, FL)

John Barnhill, Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management at Florida State University, has worked in college admissions since 1976. After graduating from college, he had every intention of becoming a Methodist minister but while in Seminary he decided that a professional pastoral career was not his true calling. During this period, he applied for a job in Admissions at Andrew College, a Methodist-related two-year college in southwest Georgia, and he’s never looked back. At Andrew College, he was a “road runner,” travelling throughout Georgia. A little more than two quick years later, he decided to pursue graduate school at Florida State University, but not before being promoted to Director of Admissions at Andrew College and bringing in his first successful freshmen class. He has frequently said that everything he learned about admissions, he learned at Andrew College.

While seeking part time work to help with graduate school expenses, he was encouraged by the newly hired Director of Admissions at Florida State, to work full time while attending graduate school part time. He agreed and started working in Admissions in December of 1978 and has yet to stop.

Barnhill considers himself to be very fortunate to have achieved upward mobility while staying with the same school. Being in one place has allowed him to focus on his passion for improving access and success for underserved populations. While at Florida State, he has effectively managed the University through impressive gains in size, quality, and diversity. He has also been instrumental in dramatic increases in retention and graduation rates.

Over the years, Barnhill has served in many capacities in regional and national professional organizations, including SACAC, NACAC, SACRAO and AACRAO. Currently, he is the State Representative for ACT and a member of the College Board’s Access and Diversity Collaborative and the College Board’s Task Force on Admissions in the 21st Century.
